These instructions assume you have Windows Home Server already installed and running and connected to your network (HP MediaSmart Server, TranquilPC T2 and T7, AVA RS3 Music Server).

The instructions work for us - they may not work for you. Use at your own risk.

1) Using your PC download the latest version of SqueezeCenter from the Logitech (Slim Devices) web site http://www.slimdevices.com/su_downloads.html.

Select the "Windows 2000/XP/Vista" version and save it to your local computer hard drive.

2) On your PC click "Start" and "Run" (or you can use the keyboard combination "Windows Key" + "R"). The following Run dialog will be show.

2) Enter the name of your Windows Home Server and press OK.

  • For TranquilPC WHS supplied by ripcaster.co.uk enter \\server
  • For HP MediaSmart WHS supplied by ripcaster.co.uk enter \\hpserver
  • For AVA RS3 Music Servers supplied by ripcaster.co.uk enter \\rs3server

3) A login dialog may be displayed. Enter the username administrator and the corresponding password.

4) Once successfully connected you will see the network shares available on the server:

5) Open the "Software" share and create a sub-folder named ripcasterInstall.

6) Copy the SqueezeCenter installation file downloaded in step 1 from your PC to the ripcasterInstall folder on the Windows Home Server.

Remote Desktop Connection

The remainder of these instructions should be performed from your PC using Windows Remote Desktop (you can also do this from a Mac - see Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac).

7) Start Windows Remote Desktop Connection on your PC - this is typically found at Start | All Programs | Accessories | Remote Desktop Connection or at Start | All Programs | Accessories | Communications | Remote Desktop Connection.

  • For TranquilPC WHS supplied by ripcaster.co.uk enter server
  • For HP MediaSmart WHS supplied by ripcaster.co.uk enter hpserver
  • For AVA RS3 Music Servers supplied by ripcaster.co.uk enter rs3server

Note that you will need to connect using the administrator user. You may need to change the "User Name" using the "Options" button. E.g. Change the username to be SERVER\administrator.

Click the "Connect" button.

A further login prompt will be displayed. Enter/Verify that the user is administrator and enter the corresponding password. You will then see the 'virtual' display on the Windows Home Server. This should be the familiar Windows XP style user interface. You may close the Internet Explorer warning paged.

9) The SqueezeCenter installation file that we copied to the server in step 6 can now be accessed from within Windows Remote Desktop. (\\server\software\ripcasterInstall corresponds to the physical path d:\shares\software\ripcasterInstall on the Windows Home Server).

Within the Windows Remote Desktop Connection do the following:

  • Click "Start"
  • Click "My Computer"
  • Double-Click "Data (D:)"
  • Double-Click "Shares"
  • Double-Click "Software"
  • Double-Click "ripcasterInstall"

10) Single Click on the SqueezeCenter installation file (SqueezeCenter-7.1.exe in this case). Right Click to show the context menu and select "Properties" menu option. Depending on how the file was copied to the server (user etc) you may need to unblock the file before it can be executed on the server. Click the "Unblock" button in the lower right section of the properties page if one is displayed (as shown):

If you do not unblock the file you may receive a message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

11) Double Click on the SqueezeCenter installation file to start the upgrade.

Select the language (English) and click OK

12) Accept the default values and click Next

15) Click the Install button.

16) The installation files will be copied to the computer.

17) SqueezeCenter installation is now complete. Click Finish.

Configuring SqueezeCenter on Windows Home Server

18) SqueezeCenter will automatically launch the browser within Window Remote desktop. First enable enable the Phishing Filter

19) Next enable the localhost as a trusted site. Select the option "Internet Options" off the "Tools" menu in Explorer on the Windows Home Server. Click on the Security Tab:

20)Click on the Sites button, then click on the Add button to add the localhost (127.0.0.1) to the trusted sites list. Click Close and then OK to close the Internet Options dialog.

21) Click the Refresh/Reload button in Explorer to display the SqueezeCenter Setup Assistant screen. Click then Next button.

22) Enter your SqueezeNetwork account deatils/or create one/ or simply click Next:

23) Select at least "Use local music" from the "Music Source" page and click Next.

24) Select the Music folder to be D:\shares\Music and click Next.

25) Select the PlayList folder to also be D:\shares\Music and click Next.

26) A summary screen will be displayed. Click Finish

27) The SqueezeCenter main screen will be displayed.

Configuring SqueezeCenter to automatically start

28) We need to make SqueezeCenter automatically start whenever the Windows Home Server is started. Click on the Start | All Programs | SqueezeCenter | SqueezeCenter Startup Options

29) Select the option "Start SqueezeCenter automatically when the computer starts". Use the username administartor with the coresponding password. Click Next.

30) Job done. The installation is now complete. You can close Remote Desktop now. Now you can copy your music to the \\server\Music share and access the SqueezeCenter web interface from your PC (typically http://server:9000 see here if you want to change the port).
