Installing Twonky Server on QNAP NAS via QPKG

Twonky UPnP on QNAP

The QNAP range of NAS storage server have Twonky UPnP Media Server embedded in the NAS firmware. The embedded version of Twonky is enabled or disabled from the "Application Servers" menu option from within the web admministration browser interface:

QNAP currently use version 6.0.38 of Twonky (in firmware 3.6.1 at time of writing May 2012).

You may also install Twonky as a QPKG package. The QPKG package opens the possibility to set "custom trees" and install alternative (newer) versions of Twonky if/when they become available.

Installing Twonky UPnP as QPKG on QNAP NAS

Use the following steps to install the QPKG version of Twonky UPnP server on a QNAP.

  • Disable the embeded version of Twonky (if enabled). Login in to the QNAP web administration interface using your browser (Internet Explorer, Safari, Chrome, Firefox etc).
    • Click the "Application Servers" option off the Home menu on the left hand side of the main administration page.
    • Click on "UPnP Media Server".
    • Remove the tick from "Enable UPnP Media Server".
    • Click the "Apply" button.
  • Download the QPKG Twonky Add-on
    • Visit www.qnap.com
    • Select the "QPKG" option off the "Resources" tab here
    • Scroll down the page to find the TWONKY QPKG package.
    • Click the download link that matches your QNAP model number. This will start the download of a compressed (zipped) installer package. Save the file. e.g. TwonkyMedia_6.0.34_arm-x19.zip
    • Once downloaded extract the files from the zipped file (In Windows right-click on the files and select "Extract All...". This will create a file with a qpkg extension e.g. TwonkyMedia_6.0.34_arm-x19.qpkg
  • Install the QPKG Package
    • Click the "Application Servers" option off the Home menu on the left hand side of the main administration page.
    • Click "QPKG Center"
    • Click the "GET MORE" tab.
    • Click the "Browse" button and select the qpkg file downloaded previoulsy e.g. TwonkyMedia_6.0.34_arm-x19.qpkg
    • Once selected click the "Install" button. You should see a confirmation when the installation is completed.
    • Click on the "Installed" tab. The TwonkyMedia should be listed and enabled.

At this point you should have a "standard" Twonky Media Server installed. You may wish to configure customer browser trees.
